Medeksa is a charred wood production facility in Panevėžys, founded by three relatives. We have charred, brushed and oiled more than 25,000 m² of timber for facades, decking and fences. And it all started not with a business plan, but with a single cabin that two brothers built with their own hands.

Our story

It all started without a business plan

There were no investors, no market research, no inherited factory. There was just one brother who wanted to build a small cabin in a forest clearing for short-term rental, and another brother ready to help him.

We built it ourselves, after work and on weekends. When we got to the facade, we spent a long time looking for something natural but out of the ordinary. That is how we found the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. The more we read, the clearer it became: here fire is not just about looks, it is centuries-tested protection for wood.

Charred boards were already available to order, but handing over the most visible part of the house to someone else felt wrong. We wanted to touch the char ourselves and understand what happens when wood burns. So we did what we always do when an experiment turns into an obsession: we decided to do it ourselves.

We charred the first boards out in the countryside, with equipment we put together ourselves. It was a slow, dirty process: board after board, by hand. We made mistakes, we ruined more than one board, but that is exactly how our understanding of quality was born. We learned to know wood through our own experience.

That first cabin is still standing and still looks great. It is not perfect, of course, but those first mistakes became the foundation of our quality control today. Now we know exactly what works and what does not.

Today that brotherly stubbornness and the urge to understand every growth ring has grown into Medeksa production. We treat every board with the same responsibility, as if it were going on our own house.

The first cabin, where it all began

From a torch to a production line

Today Medeksa is a production workshop in Panevėžys. The hand torch has been replaced by a kiln and a controlled process: we char the wood evenly so the layer of char is consistent along the full length of the board. That is the biggest difference between “looks good on one board” and “looks the same across a whole facade”.

We work with two species: spruce and larch. Spruce is lighter and more affordable, the most common choice for facades and fences. Larch is denser and more durable, more often chosen for decking and for surfaces that take more wear. Which one suits your project depends on the location, the budget and the look you want. We discuss that with each client individually rather than selling a “one size fits all” option.

Every board goes through the same four stages:

Selection

We select the timber before production, because defects do not hide under the char - they stand out.

Charring

A layer of char forms, the protective surface this whole technique exists for.

Brushing

The brittle char is brushed away and the grain opens up. How many times we brush depends on the colour you choose.

Oiling

We apply oil, which gives the colour and protection. Then we pack the boards and ship them to you.

What we learned from charring thousands of boards

More than 25,000 square metres of timber have passed through our hands. You cannot process that many boards without learning a few things.

Charring does not forgive haste.

A few extra seconds in the fire is the difference between an even protective layer and a board that ends up as reject. That is why we control the process instead of “eyeballing it”, the way we did with the first cabin.

Char does not hide defects in the wood.

If a board has a defect, charring will not mask it, it will bring it out. That is why selection before charring matters to us just as much as the charring itself. It is cheaper to reject a board at the start than to replace it on a client’s facade.

One even colour across a thousand boards is harder than a beautiful colour on one.

Anyone with a torch can make one impressive board. A facade needs the hundredth board to look like the first, and that takes a process that has been set up properly.

We learned to say “this one did not work”.

In production there are pieces that do not meet our own bar. They do not go to clients, they go on our offcuts shelf, and the lesson goes into the process.

We are not hiding it: there are workshops on the market that have been at this longer, but we came to this craft through the walls of a house we were building ourselves. We make every square metre with that same personal commitment, and it shows directly in the result.

Who is "we"?

Medeksa was founded by three people, and all three are still here every day. Today a whole team works in production, and without them our cladding would not be on nearly as many houses, but the company still rests on the same three pairs of shoulders.
